On the other side of the pitch, Shillong Lajong FC, currently fifth in the I-League 2023-24 with 19 points from 11 matches, is gearing up to face the ISL powerhouse. With two wins in their last five matches, Bobby Nongbet's squad aims to make a mark in the Super Cup.

The Kalinga Super Cup format involves all 12 ISL teams and five I-League teams, with the top three I-League teams, based on the 2023–24 standings after matches on December 24, qualifying for the group stage. The remaining two I-League teams will compete in a single-leg qualifying play-off to determine the fourth team in the group stage.
In a change this year, each team is allowed a maximum of six foreign players, with one player from the AFC quota mandatory. The tournament structure includes four groups of four teams each, competing in a single round-robin format. Group winners advance to the semi-finals, followed by a single-legged tie, with the ultimate prize being qualification for the 2024–25 AFC Champions League 2 preliminary stage.
